ETA: Life is too short to read bad books. Will not finish!---------------I'm assuming this book will have inter-racial love because it's a romance and there's an Asian guy on the cover. So far, I have barely gotten through the first quarter of the book and I'm already laughing and crying simultaneously, and not in a good way. Perhaps it's because this is one in a series, so there are tons of characters being referenced from other books who I don't know and don't care about. I guess it's like trying to watch a tv series by starting in the middle. The whole concept of an all female sisterhood of ass-kicking, powerful wimmins is presented in as paper-thin manner as possible. Basically, it is stated, and you either have to accept it, or stop reading. The main character accepts random dangerous taskings with zero support, backup, or intel, all because she's soooo loyal to this uber-speshul Athena organization. >_> She charges around a Hong Kong port looking for baddies, and runs into the Asian guy on the cover, who materializes dressed like a ninja, acting like a ninja, and smelling of chalk and ginger because he's just so zen. He talks like a chump, and is wracked by guilt from failing his duty or honor or something. Nevermind that it can hardly be his fault that his kickass Athena-alum employer was stupid enough to get killed when he was busy doing his job, in the dock yard, somewhere else.If this book had a soundtrack, I bet there would be bamboo flutes blowing mysteriously through the wind as soon as he appears. My eyeballs practically spun out of orbit from rolling so hard.Lazy, lazy writing. I might continue just to see what depths this book plunges to.
Nikki, a Coast Guard Lieutenant and Athena graduate with the special gift of smelling emotions, is sent across the world to Hong Kong in search of the elusive Deviner, who lives in a shipping container. In the process, she joins forces with a local police detective, and comes up against two different Triad gangs in her quest. Finally, they capture Deviner and send him off to Athena in the hopes that he can track down Arachne.
