A quite predictable plot with some naive characters.2* Secret Admirer2* The Unforgiven

This Edgar Award-nominated debut was well deserved. A suspenseful psychological thriller, with it's share of gruesome effects. For a thirty year old novel, debut or not by a young author...it was one of those fast can't-put-down reads. I will be looking for some of her other novels.

Kind of a slow starter, but once you get into the plot, this is an amazing story. I thought the end was rather abrupt, but all the questions were answered, so I guess that's just the end of the story.

Characters that are all dumb as rocks ("Pie full of broken glass? Surely just an accident. Nothing sinister going on there!") but plenty of drama and tension and one hell of a good psycho villain.

Fun, kind of suspenseful premise. Then things started to get cliché and characters did dumb things. my eyes rolled more than a few times while reading this "murder-mystery." Girl gets out of prison. Many questions about her crime. Girl goes to place out in the boonies to start a new life. Things are not what they seem. Band things start to happen. Can girl ever escape her past? Blah.not the worst thing I've read but it was not good. This was my first Patricia J. McDonald book and it was written some 30 years ago. I would like to try a more recent one to see if her writing style has evolved. Also, this is the first time I've ever been let down by a Stephen King blurb. Makes me wonder if he ever got paid for those because I can't believe he thought this book was "scary and engrossing."

This book was alright. It was entertaining and fairly fast paced but I had trouble identifying with the main character. She continually did stupid things all the way to the very end of the book where compassion leads her to take a gun out of her dead attackers hands which of course leads to the police barging in on her standing over a dead girl. It was a very silly way to get to the payoff. I also did not like how abruptly this book ended. It went from climax to end in what seemed like two paragraphs.

Maggie gets out of jail after spending twelve years there for the murder of her lover. She is so beaten down that she can barley function in her daily life. This is the main character of The Unforgiven. This was an okay book I figured out who was trying to kill Maggie pretty early in the story so spent most of the book wondering why no one else could not make the connection. The book was predictable and a little to long for it.It is not a bad story otherwise.

Read in one day, not a complete waste of time but not credible either - insufficient exploration of the effect of prison on the recently-freed main character, and an unrealistically speedy love affair. But some pretty descriptions to make it all bearable. Despite the lack of depth I did find myself affected by the trials and tribulations of a new girl in a small town. Found for $1 and thought I might as well try it, but I would not go out of my way for this one.

This poor jail very young for a murder she didn't commit and after 12 years she tries to get bask the life the should be able to have. But there are some very twisted people in this worls that just won't cut her any slack! You will be a little spooked and a lot shocked 3/4 quarters of the way through this book as I was. Enjoy I know I did

Really loved this book. It gave me everything I crave in a good suspense novel. The suspense was good and kept me wanting to read to make sure it ended the way I hoped it would. Will definitely be reading more from Patricia MacDonald!

I read this book over twenty years ago and I still vividly remember it. It was great...in fact, I think it's time to read it again.

Pretty standard suspense fodder. It was a good read, if predictable.

This is the earliest and best novel by MacDonald. It's very dark with good characterization.

Every single character was incredibly unlikeable. Are all New Englanders this nasty? I didn't care for anybody, really. And the plot was all given away too early in the book.

This thriller reminds me a bit of Laird Koenig's "The Little Girl who lives down the Lane".Great atmosphere on an island close to the New England coast.
