The third book in this originally plotted western finds Steve Dancy, Captain McAllen and his intrepid daughter Maggie fighting to save his sidekick Jeff Sharp from a death sentence in Prescott Arizona for a murder he didn't commit. It's a very entertaining 4 book mystery/western series that should be best read in sequence for context. It's not "Lonesome Dove" but it's damn good nonetheless.

Murder at Thumb Butte is an excellent read with a mix of the old west, a detective twist and enough good humor to keep it fun.Our favorite characters are back with a few historical people thrown in to make it interesting. Some of the newcomers from the last book make a reappearance, with the precocious Maggie McAllen taking the lead. For a fifteen year old, she did just turn 15, after all birthdays do come around at the same time each year, she could make a really good detective, if she could get a certain young man off her mind.I highly recommend this series, he does his homework and knows the areas he writes about and the history at the time.

The third book in the series, I was happy to have another adventure with my old friends Steve Dancy, MacAllen, and Sharp. Nothing fancy here, just a fun read with a murder mystery, some western gun-slinging, and humor.Likes: I didn't guess the mystery until pretty close to the end; the characters were fun and funny. Dislikes: a few f-bombs decreased my liking somewhat and will likely keep me from sharing it with too many of my more sensitive friends :( which makes it not as fun if you can't share it with your grandma, you know?

This is a fun book, though maybe not perfect. It's a not quite Western, mixing with a pretty good detective story. What makes it work, for me, is the interplay between all of the characters. The adults are believable, and so is the teen character. The plot is good enough that it kept me guessing throughout. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, there was another twist I hadn't seen coming. All in all, a pretty decent read.

If you like westerns you are going to like this series. Dancy and Sharp head down to Arizona, and Sharpe ends up being arrested for murder. Obviously he didn't do it, but who did? Captain McAllen and his now 15 yr old daughter Maggie are going to help find out. Take your pick of suspects, there are plenty to choose from. Why was Sharp being set up in the first place? You may be surprised at whodunit when the truth is revealed.

This was a well written and well narrated book. I think it's unfair to take off stars because I didn't read the earlier books in the series. It was interesting, humorous and had a good mystery going through out. I would recommend the book, but would definitely suggest reading them in order.I received this audiobook for free from the author for an honest review.

A good western novel. It reminds me of the Robert B. Parker 'Cole and Hitch' novels. This is the third novel in the series. Kudos to the author in that it can be read as a stand-alone. I would read another! Set in the Arizona Territory after the 1850's, the mystery is who killed the con man? Obviously not one of the main characters. Interestingly enough, the story includes Virgil Earp as a local lawman (before he was ambushed, and gravely wounded - in real life, not as part of the story). The repartee between the characters is well done, and does not feel stilted. There were only a couple of "wha'?" kind of moments, where the description of one of character's reactions do not match the words coming out their mouth. But these are minor and did not detract from the overall story.

The third installment of this series is a little different from the first two in that it’s more of a murder mystery. As I enjoy historical mysteries, this didn’t bother me. But I felt like this one didn't make as much use of the humor and charm the first two books had and it annoyed me when Maggie is portrayed as sharp and intelligent, yet didn't think to mention a crucial piece of information until very late in the book. So not the best of the series but still very readable and I'm hoping the series continues.

Murder at Thumb Butte is a mystery that occurs in Prescott, the territorial capital of Arizona. The story is about the murder of a crook that had defrauded most of the leading citizens of the town. Murder at Thumb Butte is an rousing mystery filled with old friends from the other Steve Dancy novels, but it is not necessary to read the previous episodes.

James D. Best just keeps getting better at delivering intelligent western novels. His main character, Steve Dancy is a delight to spend time with. There is always some tidbits of history to increase your knowledge of the American west. The narrator of this Audible book is perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed the character, Steve Dancey. The first book I read by Mr. Best was not the first in the series, so I found myself purchasing all the others. The author does a great job combining humor and mystery. I find myself hoping he adds more books to the series.

I'm hoping the author does more Steve Dancy books. I've found all three in the series very entertaining. I wasn't sure how the good guy was going to get off for the alleged murder but Best did a good job of making it all work.

Once I get hooked by a new author I have to read his books. This was just as entertaining as the other Steve Dancy books. I like that he keeps familiar characters in each book. Westerns are good when written by James D. Best.

It was really good. The story was very well done and the characters were interesting. I would call it a combination of Perry Mason and Gunsmoke.
